Episode 18 sees the team fly off to find another secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base but, compared to the glorious chaos of the last two episodes, ‘Providence’ is disappointingly sedate.
Even the now-inevitable Coulson breakdown barely hit home and, for once, Clark Gregg was left floundering. It’s a similar story for the special effects, which left a lot to be desired. It baffles me why they aren’t more sparing with the effects shots if they know there’s a pretty big chance they’ll end up looking downright shoddy.
That isn’t to say there weren’t a few titbits of exciting set-up in the lead up to the finale, but this week was left desperately in need of a singular driving force, whether that be a character or a particularly mystery.
It had to happen eventually, but Marvel have delivered their weakest episode since the midseason return. It’s still fun watching the Marvel universe on the small screen, but there’s little else of note in ‘Providence’.
